Charities can be helpful but they're NOT more important than people.
Also, some charities are evil and should NOT exist.
However, even if a charity is wonderful, if it cannot raise enough money to meet their budget, they have two options:
(1) Change their strategy for raising funds to reach their target.
Or:
(2) Cut their budget and put some goals on hold.  Otherwise, they go into debt and throw money away on interest payments.
However, charities should never even ask for tax dollars from politicians.
If individuals cannot afford to donate, it is wrong for any politician to donate on their behalf by giving tax dollars (forced from individuals) to any charity.
Also, if individuals do NOT want to donate (even if they are wealthy), it is wrong if any politician gives tax dollars to any charity.
Giving tax money to charities is forcing tax payers to donate.
It's even worse (wrong) for any politician to give tax money to a charity if the tax payer is against the interests of the charity.
Also, it is evil if any charity throws tax dollars away on interest payments.  Mentioned earlier.  Such a charity has really bad decision makers and doesn't deserve support.
Two other important considerations here:
(1) Some charities have egregious goals (politically manipulative and partisan) and should NOT have charitable status.
(2) Some evil people organize charities to fund their evil goals (like terrorists).  They create acceptable names to appear valid.
However, to be really clear, aside from those previous two considerations, no valid charity should ever seek tax dollars.  It is wrong.
